Greek Airport Traffic down 75% in H1 2020

The Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority (HCAA) recently reported a 75% drop in passenger numbers in Greek airports for the first six months of 2020, compared to the same period in 2019.

According to HCAA, all airports continue to record a large decline in passenger traffic due to travel restrictions imposed in Europe, Greece and the rest of the world to protect citizens and passengers from the spread of Covid-19.


For the estimation, total number of passengers departing from Greek airports between January-June 2020 period was 6.2 mln, compared to 24.7 mln during the first half of the last year.


During the first six months of the year, flights at Greece’s airports reached 86,888, of which 53,554 were domestic flights and 33,334 were international flights


This shows a decrease of 59.5% compared with the same period of 2019 when 214,489 flights were recorded.


According to HCAA data:


  • arrivals at Greek airports in June 2020 compared to June 2019 dropped by 93% from 8,427,908 to 588,186 passengers;

  • international arrivals in June were down by 97.5% to 87,297, from 3,477,906 the same month 2019;

  • flights at Greece’s airports in June amounted to 17,049, down by 74% when compared to June 2019.
