The European Commission has proposed the European Innovation Act, a major policy initiative aimed at turning Europe into a global leader in innovation. The Innovation Act focuses on helping innovative companies, including SMEs, startups, scaleups and researchers, to bring new ideas to market faster and more efficiently. It plans to remove legal and financial barriers and create a supportive environment for innovation.
Europe produces world-class research but often struggles to turn those ideas into successful companies. The Innovation Act aims to fix this by offering better support to entrepreneurs and reducing obstacles that block progress.
Problems it will address include:
· Too much bureaucracy and fragmented rules across EU countries.
· Lack of access to venture capital and innovation infrastructure.
· A gap between academic research and business applications.
· Unequal support for innovation across regions.
Key goals of the European Innovation Act include:
· Help turn scientific research into real products and businesses.
· Make it easier for startups to get funding and grow.
· Simplify EU rules for innovation.
· Support cross-border cooperation and standard rules across countries.
· Encourage private and public investment in deep tech and green tech.
The EU is currently gathering feedback through a public consultation that ends in 3 October 2025. The public consultation and Call for Evidence give stakeholders a chance to share their opinions and provide relevant input.
The consultation is available in all EU official languages on the Have Your Say Portal.
Based on that input, the final version of the Act is expected to be presented in early 2026.
