Shrimp Farming and Processing Feasibility Study, Ghana

In 2023, Navigator participated in the strategic assessment of investment opportunities associated with the development of Ghana's mining sector. As part of a broader economic diversification and local development programme, the company undertook a pre-feasibility assessment for the establishment of a large-scale, labour-intensive shrimp aquaculture industry designed to generate employment, strengthen regional food production and create export-oriented value-added manufacturing.

The study evaluated the commercial viability of developing an integrated shrimp production complex with an initial production capacity of approximately 500 tonnes per annum, combining conventional land-based ponds with modern Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS) to optimise productivity, improve biosecurity and reduce environmental impacts.

 

The proposed development incorporated the entire production value chain, including shrimp broodstock and hatchery facilities, grow-out ponds, RAS production units, processing and packaging facilities, refrigerated storage and distribution infrastructure serving both domestic and international markets.

 

Modern RAS technology enables intensive shrimp production under tightly controlled environmental conditions, with high levels of water recirculation, advanced filtration and biosecurity, making it well suited to high-value aquaculture operations.

The shrimp farming project examined site selection, water resources, production technologies, operational design, processing requirements, capital investment, operating costs, financial performance and market opportunities. Particular emphasis was placed on integrating intensive shrimp aquaculture technologies with conventional pond production in order to achieve an appropriate balance between capital efficiency, operational resilience and production scalability.

 

The feasibility study also evaluated opportunities for downstream value addition through processing, cold-chain logistics and export-oriented distribution, maximising local economic value creation while reducing post-harvest shrimp losses.

Beyond its commercial objectives, the project formed part of a wider strategy to promote inclusive economic development through labour-intensive agribusiness investments capable of generating significant rural employment, supporting local suppliers and creating sustainable alternative economic opportunities alongside large-scale resource sector investments.

 

The study demonstrated how advanced shrimp aquaculture technologies, integrated processing facilities and export-oriented food production could contribute to regional industrial development while strengthening Ghana's position within the growing global seafood market.
