Sea bass & sea bream export marketing study Germany by Navigator Consulting

Sea Bass & Sea Bream Export Market Study, Greece / Germany

Navigator Consulting undertook a comprehensive export market assessment examining opportunities to increase Greek exports of farmed sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) and gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata) into the German seafood market. At the time, Germany represented one of Europe's largest seafood import markets, while Greek aquaculture producers were seeking to expand exports beyond traditional Mediterranean destinations through improved market positioning, enhanced logistics and greater compliance with evolving European food safety standards.

The study evaluated the commercial viability of exporting chilled and frozen whole sea bass and sea bream, with particular emphasis on fish in the 400–600 gram market segment preferred by retailers and consumers. Alternative product presentations, including chilled whole fish, frozen whole fish and value-added products such as scaled and gutted fish packaged in shrink-wrapped retail formats, were assessed for their commercial potential within German supermarket and wholesale distribution channels.

Particular attention was given to maintaining seafood product quality throughout the refrigerated road transport chain from Greece to Central Europe while ensuring compliance with European hygiene, traceability and food safety requirements.
