Business Plan, Corrugated Packaging

In May 2002, Navigator Consulting was commissioned by the Ukrainian market leader in corrugated packaging to develop a comprehensive business plan for a $ 62.8 million investment in the corrugated packaging sector in Ukraine. The project was submitted to the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) for financing.

The business plan comprised several major components across the corrugated packaging process, and include the opening of a second manufacturing site; the investment in innovative technologies and the enhancement of corporate profitability.

Our tasks were to:

​

• Implement a market verification study in Ukraine and Russia for the corrugated packaging sector, including competitive trends and sector growth modelling to 2007;

​

• Support the shareholders in developing a bankable business plan which outlined the major investments and their resulting outputs and profitability.

Operating under a limited time frame, Navigator Consulting deployed four consultants to meet the requirements of this demanding project. A total of 35 industry interviews were implemented in Ukraine, including major multinational and Ukrainian players in the confectionery, beer, alcoholic drinks, beverages, processed foods and industrial components segments, as well as rapidly-consolidating Ukrainian retail sector. Work was implemented all over the territory of Ukraine, including Kyiv, Donetsk, Dnepropetrovsk, Artyemovsk, Kharkhiv, Odessa, L'viv, Sumi, and a number of other locations.

In-depth analysis into industry segments was undertaken, and growth prospects modelled. This was the result of secondary research, confirmed through industry interviews as well as primary sources in Ukraine. On the business planning side, work was implemented in Kyiv, London and Paris, implementing the challenging and complex investment, including an integrated profit/loss statement showing value-adding activities across the vertically-integrated production chain.

Investor approval of the business plan was gained in September - November 2002. The project is in the implementation phase, and a significant share of the budget has been disbursed with the support of an international financial institution.

 

This project will significantly affect the corrugated packaging sector in Ukraine through the introduction of innovate packaging materials, while at the same time enhancing the competitive position of our client.
